ECLA requires its member associations to:
- Verify the professional qualifications of their members (minimum degree in law).
- Apply a code of professional ethics and disciplinary rules.
- Provide for continuing legal education of their members.
The main purposes of ECLA, which does not in any way participate in political activities, are the following:
- The representation of its members on a European and international level
- The creation of centres for studies, documentation and contacts for the purpose of improving the exchange of professional information among members.'
- The organisation of meetings, conferences or seminars relating to legal matters,
- The promotion of research on legal matters, in particular by publishing articles.
